Hi everybody,

I’m sitting here with my lunchtime cup of tea and thinking about last night’s jam session. It was almost a big band jam session last night with nine musicians playing, most of the time some darn good jazz (there were a few numbers that didn’t go so well but were a great source of amusement!) Good to see Monte back on drums (Yes, Yippee, Yippee, we had a drummer again!) Wayne came back to the fold with his Alto as well. Good to see and hear the both of you again, come back soon (like next session maybe?) Audrey on Piano and Bob on Bass along with Monte kept us all together. Dave on Violin, John on Clarinet, Ken on Trumpet as well as Steve on Trumpet & Piano and yours truly on Clarinet filled out the line up and made good sound last night.

Quite a variety of tunes in normal JJJ tradition and quite a workout on a few of them! Thanks to all of you for attending. Next session is on Thursday, August 12th followed by the Dixieland jam session on Wednesday August 18th. Mark your calendars and I’ll see you there.

Have fun and stay cool.

Hi Everybody

Another hot & humid night for July 8th’s jam session but this time the power was on at Jefferson Heights! Seven of us had a fun little jam session. Rick, Audrey & Steve did the duties on piano with Bob backing them up on bass. Steve also exercised his many talents on trumpet and bass. Aaron came along to impress us with his vocal prowess and wonder upon wonders we had a trombone player! Larry (not yours truly) bought along his trombone and did a darned good job sitting in on all the numbers. Man! It was good to hear a trombone at the jam session again. Come back again soon Larry, we want to hear you again. We were still without a drummer (where for art though all you drumming stars?) but Bob kept us all together with his sturdy bass lines. Rather a fun session and one of the most enjoyable for me in a while. I must mention Audrey’s piano solo on Summertime which was one of the most beautiful improvised solos I have ever heard her play with delicately cascading notes just like summer rain. Cool Audrey!

Next jam session is the Dixieland jam session on Wednesday July 14! Mark your calendars and make the time to come along and join us having a blast with the jazz that started it all!

See you there.

Seven dedicated jammers braved Charlottesville’s gridlock traffic, failed traffic lights and the aftermath of one of the fiercest summer storms to make it to Jefferson Heights last night. JH was without power like most of Charlottesville so we had an acoustic jam session and in true JJJ tradition it went rather well.

We had to cut the session short when we started running out of daylight and as the JH AC system was inoperative it was starting to get a little sticky! We all had fun though and a big thanks to all of you for attending.

Next jam session is on Thursday July 8th followed by the Dixieland jam session on Wednesday July 14th. Mark your calendars! See you there.

from whence El Gordito heads west

Hi Everybody.

Nice little jam session last night with seven of us enjoying the warm evening and having fun playing jazz (and entertaining the JH residents as well). Regular jammers all last night; Bob on bass, Steve on piano and trumpet, John and yours truly on clarinet, Dave on violin and good to see Audrey back with us doing a superb job on the piano. Aha! you say, “that’s only six people!” There is a good reason for that. Gordon, our erstwhile and loyal regular drummer, was with us too, but also for probably the last time. Gordon is leaving us all and moving to Texas so last night was possibly Gordon’s swansong. Gordon has been such a regular drummer for the JJJ that he will be sorely missed. I’m sure all of you will join me in wishing Gordon the best of luck in Texas. Luckily Gordon says he can still look after the JJJ website for us so he has not left our little bunch of musicians for good.

We always kind of relied on Gordon to be the drummer for us and a darned good job he always did with his little kit of drums (plus whatever he could find to hit !) So now we need a regular drummer urgently! Any of you drummers out there able to help? As Gordon showed us you don’t need a full kit just a snare, brushes, sticks and a hi-hat/cymbal can make a great jazz drum sound. Pass the word around everybody please.

Next jam is our Dixieland monthly jam session at JH next week on Wednesday June 16th. Come along and play the jazz that started it all! See you there.

Hi Everybody.

Great session last night with ten of us turning up to play some fun jazz. First off a big welcome to a new jammer. Rick has just moved to the area and came along last night to join in on the piano. Good job Rick! come back and jam with us anytime. Rich took the piano to start with and we got underway with a blues to warm us all up which I think was based loosely on Billie’s Bounce?. We worked our way through lot of the JJJ staples, When your smiling, Bye Bye Blackbird etc. (These “sing-a-long” tunes are always very popular with the JH residents a number of who were listening to us last night.) We tried a few different numbers including a lot of songs with Aaron singing vocals one of which “Hello young lovers” ?) We stopped and started trying to work out whether it was in 3/4 or 4/4! A darn good session overall with lots of good musicians. Thanks to all of you who came along and enjoyed themselves.

Remember that this Wednesday, May 19th is our monthly Dixieland jam session, 7pm at Jefferson Heights. These are always great fun and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attend whether to play or listen. Come along this Wednesday and play some of the Jazz that started it all!

Next regular session is on Thursday May 27th see you at both of them.

Larry
